A Day In The Life of a Mainport Deck Cadet

Mainport runs a Cadet program with NMCI Cork, one of our Cadets – Audrius  has written about both a normal day and ship-to-ship operations day onboard the Mainport Pine.

Normal Day aboard Mainport Pine

0530 – Get up and prepare myself for the day’s work.

0540 – Go down to mess room and have my breakfast.

0550 – Go to changing room and put on my PPE

0600 – Proceed to the bridge and have a cup of coffee with the captain. Talk about the day’s schedule and any extra tasks to carry out for the day.

0700 – Go down on main deck and help AB’s to prepare mooring stations for going into port.

0730 – Set up the pilot ladder.

0754 – Take pilot to the bridge.

0800 – Proceed to forward mooring station and help the Bosun with the mooring lines. (Throw heaving lines, operate windlass, apply stoppers, secure ropes, place rat guards and tidy up mooring station after mooring operation)

0830 – Help the AB’s to deploy the gangway and rig the gangway as required when its secured into position. (Unsecure the gangway, hook up the slings, control the tag line, once in position secure and unhook the slings and rig the gangway net)

0910 – Assist the oiler in getting ready to replace the starboard bridge wing window. (Gather the right PPE, equipment and transfer the new window to the bridge)

0930 – Carry out a risk assessment and a toolbox meeting for the operation.

0950 – Set up the area for removing the window (fix harness in position, place plywood boards on the grading to prevent falling objects, gather all equipment required)

1000 – Start the operation (remove the window frame, remove the old window and clean up the inside of the frame. Remove old silicone and dirt from around the frame. Apply new silicone and set the new window into place. Fix the frame back into position and secure properly. Tidy up the work area and put all equipment back into place. Wash the window with warm water to remove any stains)

1150 – Go down and prepare myself for lunch time.

1200 – Have my lunch.

1230 – Help 2nd Engineer to disconnect sludge hose and feed them back to the shore side.

1330 – Help 2nd Officer to inspect all life jackets on the vessel.

1500 – Assist the deck crew in checking and loading ship’s cargo (paint).

1600 – Clean Laundry room, ally way and crew changing room.

1700 – Catch up with my college (projects, task reports and journal).

1800 – Have my dinner and proceed to the bridge for a coffee with the officers and relax after the day’s work.

Ship to Ship operation aboard Mainport Pine

0530 – Get up and prepare myself for the day’s work.

0540 – Go down to mess room and have my breakfast.

0550 – Go to changing room and put on my PPE

0600 – Proceed to the bridge and have a cup of coffee with the captain. Talk about the day’s schedule and any extra tasks to carry out for the day.

0700 – Go down to the main deck and prepare pilot ladder for Eagle worker to come on board.

0710 – Take the worker on board and take seismic equipment from the workboat. Help the worker to inspect and fix the two tail buoys that got recovered a day before. Get the tail buoys rigged for launching and apply quick release system)

0937 – Assist the crew in launching of the two tail buoys and get the pilot ladder ready again.

0950 – Supervise the workboat operation when the seismic crew disembark and pass the equipment back to the workboat.

1125 – Get the deck ready for going alongside Astra G. Receive two tail buoys on board safely and secure them on deck.

1140 – Carry out toolboxes required for ship to ship operation and assist deck crew in deploying the aft fender (remove lashings, connect slings, give crane driver signals and secure slings on deck)

1200 – Have my lunch.

1215 – Go forward to the mooring station and prepare for seismic mooring operation as per requirements.

1239 – Assist AB’s in mooring operation (pull in ropes and help to put them on the bits)

1251 – Pass fuel hose and remain at the bunker station to maintain bunker watch and observe ships movement and fender positioning. Keep communication between both bunkering parties and the bridge.

1355 – When bunkering finished assist oiler in taking up the fuel hose back on deck and secure them properly.

1432 – Get starboard pilot station ready and put on appropriate PPE. Collect package from Amazon Warriors FRB, after a toolbox meeting with the captain. After FRB is clear secure the gates deliver package to the bridge and help deck crew on deck with cargo operation.

1555 – Assist AB’s in letting go operation from the seismic vessel.

1600 – Help AB’s is recovering the Yokohama fender and secure it on deck.

1630 – Clean Laundry room, ally way and crew changing room.

1710 – Catch up with my college (projects, task reports and journal).

1800 – Have my dinner and proceed to the bridge for a coffee with the officers.

1945 – Take a sun bearing for compass error calculations and relax after the day’s work.
