River Lee Cleanup Underway
The Mainport shipping group is currently driving the ‘River Cleanup’ campaign which will see hundreds of shopping trolleys and other debris removed from city centre river beds. Joined in its efforts by Wm O’Brien Plant Hire, Loftus Demolition and Ascon Group, other volunteers include members of the Cork and Bishopstown Rotary Clubs and Common Purpose, along with volunteers from all sectors. Cork City Council and The Port of Cork are also lending their support to the venture. ‘It is great to see private enterprise and volunteers working together for the common good, and to see Naomhoga Corcaί Rowing Club and swimming clubs, along with Meitheal Mara (who build traditional boats) involved in such a practical way’, said Project Co-Ordinator Dave Ronayne of The Mainport Group. ‘This project can only be carried out at low water during daylight hours and there are only two or three days each month when the tide is suitable, with a mere four to five hours to complete the task. We are calling on all interested parties to join with us in continuing this clean-up, and hope to set up a regular rota to enhance our lovely River Lee’ he said. Full health and safety regulations are in operation and companies or individuals wishing to volunteer their services should contact Dave Ronayne at The Mainport Group, 021 4317900 or email dronayne@mainport.ie
